Chapter 10: Endurance
The key to walking is endurance. Endurance is your ability to keep going regardless of your exhaustion, the ache in your muscles, and the mental stress that you’re feeling from the exercise. Endurance is what you’re striving for above all else when you’re walking and I’m going to encourage you to keep pushing on. Honestly, endurance is something that you’re probably going to build up rather quickly.
In fact, I guarantee that by the end of your first week, you’ll be expanding on your initial route, which is exactly what I want you to do. Building up your route and giving yourself more to work with is crucial. The body is adaptable, no matter what your age is or what your body weight is, your body is going to rapidly grow, strengthen and adjust to whatever you throw at it and you’re going to need to change up the plan to make it work out harder.
With that being said, here are some of the things that you’re going to notice at first. The first thing that you’re going to notice is that your lungs are going to stop burning and that breathless sensation that you’re experiencing all the way along your journey is going to melt away and your lungs are going to be much stronger. You’ll be able to walk longer because of this. You’re also going to notice that the muscle burn that you once experienced at certain points and lengths of time is all but gone now. When this melts away, that means that you’re able to go farther and you’re going to maybe even pick up the pace. That’s why you see speed walkers all the time. They’re trying to test the limits of their endurance and they’re maximizing their potential. Finally, you’re going to notice that you’ll start to crave the muscle ache that you once had and that you hated with a passion. Now, you’ll crave that feeling and hunger for it to return. Once you’ve gone your entire route without breaking a sweat or not feeling any kind of burn in your legs or in your lungs, then it’s time to adjust.
There are several ways that you can adjust a workout so that it’s giving you the maximum amount of reward that you need. The first thing that you can do is expand your walking route that I explained earlier. By growing your route, you’ll be giving yourself more time and distance to explore what your body is capable of. This is the first and most obvious way of increasing your workout and intensity. Next thing that I would suggest is to up the speed by which you’re walking. By increasing the speed that you’re walking, you’re pushing your muscles to accomplish what they were originally doing in a shorter amount of time, meaning that they’re going to have to increase their output. This is going to push your lungs and your muscles to their limit and it’ll increase your intensity greatly.
